I like to call it the ‘ABCs’ of branding (see what I did there?) One of the first questions I ask clients in our Brand Workshops is:
‘WHAT IS A BRAND?’
Usually there’s quite a lot of shifting on seats and looking to the heavens for answers. Then the braver people start to say a few words, usually starting with ‘logo’ and the more enlightened groups go on to include things like ‘reputation,’ ‘image,’ ‘marketing tools’ and so forth.
But let me tell you this – the answer is a lot more simple, if a little less tangible.
A BRAND IS WHAT STAYS IN PEOPLE’S MINDS
I promise you, it really does boil down to no more than that. It’s not what YOU put out there, it’s what THEY REMEMBER about your business or organisation that’s important.
With that in mind, you’re only truly in control of your brand (#winningatbranding) when you:
GET PEOPLE TO REMEMBER WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO

Once you have your Brand Strategy written down, you need to ensure you communicate it in a CLEAR way. As I mentioned, your Brand is what stays in people’s minds and let me tell you this:
PEOPLE DON’T REMEMBER MUCH!
The world is so full of noise these days that hardly anything sticks. What’s more, people’s brains are hard-wired to dump any information that is not important or relevant to them.
So decide what you want them to remember (making sure that it’s relevant) and repeat it, A LOT.
CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY TO CLARITY
